LOCKJAW: Lauren Conway, Lana May Fleming, and Luke van Gelderen. Curated by Shaista Sosrowardoyo.

Preview: Friday, 6 October 2023, 6 pm-8 pm

Exhibition run: 7-27 October 2023
Excerpt from exhibition text, Shaista Sosrowardoyo.

Artists Lauren Conway, Lana May Fleming, and Luke van Gelderen in this exhibition, LOCKJAW explores the emotional dimensions of performing identities in a reality where truth is ever-mutating. Delving into feelings of loneliness, desire, disembodiment, and dissonance, this exhibition focuses on how the information age influences our tangible realities and - by extension - the spaces, bodies, and networks that we inhabit. Working across a diverse range of disciplines including video, new media, sculpture, drawing and painting, all three artists present heightened effigies of ourselves.

Lauren Conway delves into the intricacies of the cognitive and emotional dissonance that arises between the built environment, education and the percolation of interests, ideas and ephemera that is produced because of and also in spite of these spaces. In response to these concepts a sequestering of the artist's individual interests has taken place in the pursuit of understanding another. In this case her younger brother, a burgeoning film student at St. John's Central College Cork. In A tacit channel (2023), viewers encounter a vacant library bathed in shades of blue-green, and filled with unidentifiable volumes. Conway's portrayal of this space, intended for sharing, exchanging, and absorbing knowledge, becomes strikingly poignant due to its haunting absence of occupants or indeed any legible content. In Portrait of my brother: Mask (2023) and Portrait of my brother: Shirt (2023), Conway utilises spaces and objects to delve into the interior world of her younger brother. These works reflect a preoccupation with the profound challenges of accessing the core selves, beliefs, interests, and identities of others. The works lead us to question whether our essence can be expressed through possessing external objects and inhabiting certain spaces, or whether the amalgamation of these things obstruct the revelation of our truest selves.

This exhibition is kindly supported by The Arts Council of Ireland, Ranelagh Arts, Angelica Network, Fingal Arts, and Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council. Special thanks also go to the Douglas Hyde Gallery, our technician Eoghan McIntyre, our painter Richard Murphy, Dianne Murphy, Ava Chapman, Damon Conway, and Oisín Tozer for their invaluable help.

Artworks 2023 - Remembering the Future, Visual Carlow
08 Jun - 27 Aug 2023

This year’s edition of Artworks takes the title Remembering the Future. This impossible proposition is designed to raise questions about time and reality, and how these two abstract concepts might be utilised to reflect the world as we see it, or other worlds as we might imagine them. Included are works that address real and imagined histories and futures, using, among other methods: speculative archaeology, mourning processes, traditional crafts, and engagements with the natural world.

Portrait of my brother: Narmer’s Baboon, Hoard of
Silver Ingots, Corleck Head

This work arises from an ongoing collaborative drawing project I am engaged in alongside my younger brother, a first year film student at St.John's Central College Cork. Which is approached with a pre-emptive interest in his esoteric inner life, to which I have limited access. Until his decision to study film, this has been expressed through his drawings.
This selection of ink drawings act as building blocks within a larger portrait of my brother; Who will raise these subject matters in passing during our phone calls. My commitment is then to represent these disparate cultural touchstones mentioned, in order to build a portrait of the range of captivation and mystery that he, and potentially we, carry within ourselves.

The work plays on the formal documentation of historic artifacts from Institutional collections that function as educational tools for the public. Through the act of reproducing the objects in this form via drawing, the artefacts are removed from their encased plinths and set adrift in the unconscious mind of those that encounter them.
The selection on display at Artworks 2023 includes references from Ireland and Egypt. The larger series at present also represents cultural touchstones from Armenia, The Kingdom of Dumnonia (now Cornwall), Finland, Spain, as well as artifacts from film and popular culture.

Portrait of my Brother: Narmer’s Baboon, Hoard of Silver Ingots, Corleck Head is simultaneously a lamentation on the impossibility of achieving an objective reading of another’s mind and our cultural pasts; and a celebration, of the physical manifestations of both that continue to survive. In the physical world, and within our infinitely overlapping individual, communal and collective psyches.

Special thanks to my collaborative partner Damon Conway for his participation in the production of this work.

Draw a Card, Corner Gallery, RHA
30 Jan - 9 March 2025

Draw a Card is part of the final iteration of an ongoing project which centres around three of the
artists’ family members' engagement with state-run educational spaces.
This iteration investigates the conflict between Conway’s twin sister’s studies in astrology, tarot
and crystal healing and her demanding, logic-driven studies in bio-pharmaceutical chemistry
while at university. The title Draw a card refers to both sisters' chance encounters with
expansive and innumerable source materials within early adulthood, and how baring to witness
to information intrinsically alters the self in unquantifiable ways.
This selection of paintings arises from Conways research while on residence at Studio Voltaire,
London, working with the meticulously curated, hyper-colour-coordinated filing system that her
sister has developed to study both fields.

The evolution of an expanded colour palette in the artist’s practice cites implicitly the source
materials used, referring to the standardised pastel palettes of post its, labels and ring binders.
The subdued colours utilised in these prosaic materials are heightened and pushed to the limits
of their saturation possibilities, in reference to arresting visual qualities of man made and

organic crystals, modern tarot decks and astrology ephemera. Holding the viewer in an
exploration of the materiality of the painting, which at once seeks to contain the subject matter
through geometric organisation and elevate to the point of spectacle through traditional glazing
techniques.

The paintings position her sisters disparate filing systems and research materials, within a single
coalescing plane in reference to the craft and organisation involved in these systems which blur
the line between meditation, utility and artistic exploration. This unification further asks the
viewer to consider our impulses and abilities to operate within a host of logic systems in order to
navigate studies, vocations and the world at large.

All Flowers in Time Bend Towards the Sun, The Coach House, Dublin Castle
14 Feb - 11 May 2025

All Flowers in Time Bend Towards the Sun is an ambitious exhibition that delves into the nuanced interplay of dualities shaping both art and life. Curated by artists Paul Hallahan and Lee Welch, the show draws inspiration from the layered contrasts found in the works of Flann O’Brien—rural versus urban, reality versus imagination, and seriousness versus humour. The exhibition brings together a top line-up of Irish and international artists working across painting, sculpture, and video to explore how these dualities coexist, interact, and ultimately rely on one another. The exhibition takes its title from an unreleased song by the late Jeff Buckley and Elizabeth Fraser. These eight beautiful words, All Flowers in Time Bend Towards the Sun, resonate through their poetic form, offering a boundless sense of imagination. They hint at growth, transformation, and the natural gravitation toward light and connection, echoing the themes of duality and interconnectedness at the heart of this show.Through these diverse practices, the exhibition creates a space for viewers to reflect on the interconnectedness of opposites, underscoring that the most profound truths often lie in their tension. As the title suggests, these forces are not static; they lean towards one another, like flowers bending towards the sun, illustrating the beauty and complexity of existence

AboutLauren Conway

Academy Schools. In 2021 she was the recipient of the RHA Graduate Studio Award, The DLR/IADT Emerging Artist Bursary, and The Dock/IADT Graduate Award for her graduate exhibition A Great Public Meeting. In 2024 Conway was in residence at Studio Voltaire, London developing a new body of work The Healing System which is the subject of a solo exhibition at the RHA, Dublin 2025. Exhibitions include All Flowers in Time Bend Towards the Sun, Dublin Castle, Dublin, (2025), Draw a Card, Royal Hibernian Academy, Dublin, (2025), Things Changed, Kevin Kavanagh Gallery, Dublin, (2024), Remembering the Future, VISUAL Carlow, Carlow, (2023), A Great Public Meeting, The Dock, Leitrim, (2022)

Statement

Lauren Conway is a Dublin and London based visual artist who uses archival materials, documentation from site visits, and found images in her drawing, painting and installation processes in order to explore experiences of education. A running concern throughout her work is a desire to explore empty educational spaces that question and challenge aspirational promises put forward by states through formal education. The work opens up a space for further connections to be made beyond the educational, exploring tensions between empty school sites and the sensitive, exploratory writings, drawings and worldviews of those that inhabit them.

Her practice involves simultaneous strands of thematic enquiry. Ongoing projects include The Comet (2022-ongoing)
a collaborative drawing project with her younger brother, a film student at St. John’s Central College Cork; approached with a pre-emptive concern that he may be magic; as well as The Healing System (2024-ongoing) which investigates the conflict between her twin sister’s studies in astrology, tarot, crystal healing and her demanding, logic-driven studies in bio-pharmaceutical chemistry.
